Detailed Itinerary for the 17 Days Uganda Safaris

Day 1: Welcome to Uganda:

Your driver/guide will be at Entebbe Airport to pick you up from your flight and take you directly to your lodge in Kampala. Depending on the time of your arrival, you may be able to explore the sites in and around Kampala.

Day 2: Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park:

After an early breakfast you will set off from Kampala and travel westwards to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for approximately 9-10 hours. Then, you will have a brief stop at the Equator for the experience and some photographs. Continue the journey through the beautiful verdant rolling hills characteristic of this part of the country. Afterwards, you will have a lunch break in Mbarara town and then continue to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park arriving late in the afternoon hours.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking and relax at the lodge:

After a heavy early breakfast but with packed lunch, you will transfer to the park headquarters in the respective region where your gorilla permit is located. While there, you will have a briefing before embarking on your gorilla trek at 8:30 am. Afterwards, our park guides will take you through the thick buttress root tree forest plus undergrowth- tracking the gorillas.

This 2 – 8 hour Gorilla trek requires a reasonable degree of fitness a pair of jungle shoes. Furthermore, when you find the gorillas, you will listen to them grumble as well as take photographs with them for only 1 hour. It’s important to note that there are only about 880 of these beautiful apes left in the world. More to that, most of them over 400 are fortunately found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Lastly, you will go to your lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight (after the trekking activity).

Day 4: Travel to Lake Bunyonyi:

To begin with, you will have a delicious breakfast. Thereafter, you will drive to Lake Bunyonyi.  The lake is said to be the second deepest lake in Africa and one of the most beautiful places in western Uganda.

Also, it is one of the few places in the country where it is safe to swim as it is bilharzia free.

The journey takes 6-7 hours and you will have your lunch en-route.

Thereafter, dinner and overnight will be at one of the many lodges near the lake.

 

Day 5: Canoeing and hiking on Lake Bunyonyi and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

This morning you can choose to either have a canoe-ride on the lake or a walk through the surrounding hills. The landscape around the lake is made up of steep hills covered with lush green vegetation protruding from the water’s edge.

In addition, Bunyonyi means “place of little birds” and as the name suggests, there is plenty of birdlife around the lake. You can choose to go for a canoe ride to see water animals and birds, go for swimming, or hike to the view point in the hills to admire the volcano mountain ranges at the border with Rwanda. Thereafter, in the afternoon you will drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Day 6: Do a game drive / game viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park & afternoon Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

Have an early morning game drive so as to spot the early risers such as the elusive leopards and spotted hyenas. Additionally, the game drive offers you possible views of lions, Buffaloes, elephants, waterbucks, spotted hyenas, Uganda Kobs among others.

After the game drive return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch after which you gather at Mweya jetty for afternoon boat trip along the Kazinga channel to have a likely close look at hippos and crocodiles. Also, the banks of the channel are home to many bird species that include the saddle billed stork, the pink-backed pelicans, the pied and malachite kingfishers among others.

From the 2 hour activity, you can undertake a game drive along the channel track in the Mweya peninsular to spot more game before retiring for dinner and overnight

Day 7: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park:

After your breakfast, you will  set off on a 4 hour journey to Kibale Forest National Park.  During the drive to Kibale National Park you will be able to enjoy an impressive sight of the legendary “Mountains of the Moon” .

Then, you will have lunch in Fort Portal and proceed to Kibale Forest national Park.

You will either choose go to the unique Bigodi swamp eco-tourism site or visit the crater lakes area.

At Bigodi swamp, you will see uncommon plants and rare bird species such as the Great Blue Turaco, little Bulbul, Rwenzori Turaco and the Narina Trogon, among others.

Conversely, at the crater lakes area, you will enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Lastly, Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge of your booking

Day 8: Chimp tracking and Bigodi nature walk:

After breakfast, report to the ranger station in Kibale forest national park before 8:00am. Here, you will first receive a short briefing about chimp tracking. Then, you will follow the ranger guide to the forest to begin chimp tracking.

Interestingly, these delightful apes are more closely related to humans than to any other living creature. In addition, they are magnificent to watch as they squabble and play in fruitful trees or on tree branches. Tracking time is unpredictable. However, it can from 1-6 hours as meeting them depends on where they spent their last night from.

Therefore, some physical fitness is needed. Once you meet them, you are strictly allowed only one hour with them taking photography as well as studying their behaviors. Retire back to the lodge for lunch, after lunch you will go for a guided walk in Bigodi wetland sanctuary to look for more species of primates and birds like the shining blue kingfisher, blue Throated Roller, see various species of trees among many other species plant.

Day 9: Transfer to the Uganda safari destination of Murchison Falls National Park.

To begin with, you will make a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for white Rhino tracking. Then, you will proceed to the park, where you will visit the top of the falls on arrival.
Very early in the morning, your Uganda safari guide will pick you from the hotel and transfer you to Murchison Falls National Park 311km about 5 hours’ drive.

On your way, you will pay a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – where white rhinos are kept in a natural environment. Thereafter, you will make a stop-over at either Kabalega diner or Masindi town for your lunch. You will arrive in the evening at the top of the falls.

At the top of the falls is where River Nile-the world’s longest river, is forced to flow through a 7 meters wide narrow rocky gauge before ferociously plunging down 43 meters. From here you will take a ferry across the river to the northern section.

Lastly, you will have relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 10:  Morning game drive and afternoon launch cruise along the Victoria Nile River

To further accelerate this Uganda safari, you will have an early morning game drive towards the northern river bank. There are several animals there, for instance;

  • Cape buffalo
  • Elephants

  • Rothschild’s giraffes
  • hyenas, hartebeests
  • waterbucks
  • Oribi
  • Bushbucks
  • leopards.

Return to the lodge for relaxation till you take your lunch. After lunch, go for a boat cruise to the bottom of Murchison Falls. This boat trip along the Nile is the highlight of a tour to Murchison Falls National Park and is so fascinating. In addition, it allows you to have a close and personal interaction with the animals.

Interestingly, over 4,000 hippos stay along this stretch of the river. Also, there are numerous Nile crocodiles. Additionally, there is a diversity of stunning birdlife stunning. For instance, there are brightly colored kingfishers and bee-eaters dwelling along the riverbanks.

On your lucky day, you may see the rare shoebill. More to that, you can have a boat cruise to the base of the falls to further your impression of the falls and the Nile at large.

Afterwards, you will settle for your overnight stay and dinner.

Day 11: Transfer to Kidepo Valley National Park.

After a heavy breakfast at the lodge, embark on the transfer to Kidepo valley national park in the far northern part of Uganda. The park is known as the largest in Uganda perched in a natural systematic dry savannah overlooking the border of South Sudan and Kenya. Pass through Gulu and Kitgum the areas which suffered much from the Lord’s resistance Army headed by Kony. However the area is now free and Kony was fought out of this part of Uganda. Day 12: Do morning game drive and Karamojong community tour and Early morning breakfast

To begin with, you will embark on a game drive in the savannah landscape of the Kidepo valley national park. In addition, you will drive to the Narus valley where most of the animals congregate as they come to drink water. Expect game, for instance lions, elephants, buffaloes, Rothschild giraffes, cheetah, warthogs among many other wildlife; you may also come across the Ostrich.

After the activity Retreat back to the lodge for relaxation and have lunch. After in the afternoon go for a community walk to Karamojong pastoralist with their exciting custom that surrounds these authentic people. They will take you around their home steads, cattle Kraals, their cultural Manyattas and they will also perform for you their cultural songs, after come back at the lodge for dinner and overnight at Apoka Safari Lodge (Upmarket) Nga’ moru Wilderness (Midrange) or Apoka Rest Camp (Budget)

 

Day 13: Trek to Morongole Mountains to the native Karamojong

This day you will hike to the Morongole Mountains where the native Karamojong are known to be flourishing. The native Karamojong are famously known to be the original inhabitants of the area before they were forced to the mountains by the coming of the pastoralist groups. The climbs are rewarding as you will be fortunate to see the remarkable views of Karamoja plains and south Sudan Mountains. After the activity retire back to the lodge for dinner and an overnight at Apoka Safari Lodge (Upmarket) Nga’ moru Wilderness (Midrange) or Apoka Rest Camp (Budget)

Day 14: Transfer to Sipi Area. Do game drive in Pian Upe Game Reserve en route

On this day after breakfast, you will embark on another thriving activity in the Sipi area in the eastern part of Uganda. However you will first enjoy a game drive in the famed Pian Upe Game Reserve for opportunity to see more species of wildlife like;

Day 15: Trek Sipi falls and then transfer to Jinja

Wake up early for a hearty breakfast and then after embark on the hike to Sipi falls. The hike is rewarding with impressive views of the calming water and landscapes including the farmland of the Bagisu. After this activity get back to the lodge for lunch and later transfer to Jinja.

Day 16: Adventure on the Nile

To begin with you will have breakfast. Thereafter, you will visit the source of the Nile River and to take part in the popular adventurous activities in the nearby Bujagali falls. Also, you will have the option to go rafting, jet boating, horse riding, mountain biking, quad biking or bungee jumping. Thereafter, drive back to Kampala arriving in the evening in time for your late departure flight or retire to a hotel of your booking for a well deserved rest.

Day 17: Drive to Kampala

In the morning you will have breakfast and then drive back to Kampala. Then, you will stop in one of the towns along the way for lunch. You will then drive to reach Kampala in the evening.
Accommodation for tonight is not inclusive in the program. If you wish to depart tonight from Entebbe Airport, make sure your flight is at 10 pm or later. If you would like us to book one (or more) nights in Kampala and/or Entebbe, please let us know.
