The 14 Days Uganda Birding Trip spots you to a variety of bird species found if different area. some of these areas include Mabamba wetland, Bwindi Impenetrable national park, Queen Elizabeth national park, Semuliki national park and Kibale Forest national park.

Itinerary for the 14 Days Uganda Birding Trip

Day 1 Arriving Entebbe.

Arrival and overnight at Entebbe, Travelers Inn/Entebbe Golf View Inn, Lake Victoria hotel

Day 2: Early morning transfer to Mabamba for the Shoebill.

Leave Entebbe in the early morning at 6:30 and drive 1½ hrs the 35 km (bad road) to go birding the Mabamba Swamp. While there, you will be paddled in a canoe to search for the mighty Shoebill among others.

Also, look out for other birds like Pink-backed Pelican, Yellow-billed Duck, Malachite Kingfisher, Blue-breasted Bee-eater etc. Leave Mabamba at 1 o’clock, bird your way to lake Mburo NP via Equator for photographs.

Dinner and overnight at Rwakobo rock/ Mantana Tented camp/Mihingo Lodge/Lake Mburo Safari lodge

Day 3: Transfer to Ruhizha (Bwindi NP)

Early morning drive to Ruhizha ( Bwindi Northern sector) with stops for birding. Later, have dinner  and overnight at Tavern cottages/Community Bandas, Ruhizha Gorilla lodge

Day 4: Whole day Bird Mubwindi Swamp, Ruhizha Area (Bwindi NP).

After early breakfast we leave the camp at 6:30 am. Then, we walk down with packed lunch to Mubwindi Swamp for a whole day birding. Additionally, we will look for specials, for instance;

  • Black-billed Turaco
  • Fine-banded Woodpecker
  • African Green-Broadbill
  • Mountain Greenbul
  • Red-faced Woodland Warbler
  • Mountain Yellow Warbler
  • Chestnut-throated Apalis

Dinner and overnight as above

Day 5: Transfer to Buhoma

To begin with, depart for Buhoma via the neck birding en-route for species like Tambourine Dove, Black bee-Eater, Mountain Wagtail, Toro Olive-Greenbul, White-starred-Robin, Strange Weaver, Dusky Twin Spot, Grauer’s Warbler, Black bee-eater, Red Throated Wryneck among others. In addition, we will be birding through farmland, forest edge and forest habitats. Thereafter, we shall do a short village walk around Buhoma area.

Dinner and overnight at Bwindi View Bandas/ Engagi lodge/Mahogany lodge/ Silverback lodge

Day 6: Whole day birding at Buhoma, Bwindi National Park.

To enter the Park is only allowed at 8:00 am. There will be time to bird around the camp before 8 o’clock. Look for Chapin’s Flycatcher, Short-tailed Warbler, White-bellied Robin-chat, Petti’s Cuckoo Shrike and other middle altitude forest birds that we would have missed in other forests.

Day 7: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

After briefing at 8:00 am, you will visit the higher elevation forest, one of the world’s great natural treasures providing home to mountain Gorillas. If you come early, we can do some birding in the village looking for Red-chested Flufftail and probably the Bat Hawk.

Lunch, dinner and overnight as above.

Day 8: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth NP

Early morning transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park via Ishasha and we shall have our lunch on the way. At Ishasha, we shall see a variety of Game including climbing lions, Elephants, Buffaloes and other game. Then, we shall bird around the hotel in the evening for species like Blue quail, African Crake, Ross’s Turaco, Jackson’s Pipit, Red-headed lovebird, Cassin’s Flycatcher, Black bee-eater, White-backed, Lappet Faced, Ruppel’s, White headed, Palmnut Vultures, Martial, Wahlberg’s, Welter Banded neck, Fish Eagles, Shining Blue King fisher and other birds .

Dinner and overnight at Bush Lodge/ Mweya Safari lodge/ Kingfisher lodge/ Kyambura lodge/ Katara lodge.

Day 9: Bird Queen Elizabeth National Park.

First, leave the lodge at 6:30. Then, go for an early morning game drive and birding. Afterwards, you may have lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, you can go for the launch (boat) trip on the Kazinga Channel. There you will see a variety of wildlife, hundreds of hippos, crocodile and bird life from a boat. Also, look out for birds like Pelicans, Green-backed Heron, Yellow-billed Stork, Saddle-billed Stork, African Spoonbill, Martial Eagle, Common Button Quail, Senegal Plover, and Sunbirds among others.

Day 10: Transfer to Semuliki N.P

After breakfast we will transfer to Semliki birding en-route through QENP and the northern side of Rwenzori Mountains that are dry Savanna woodland. Later, we shall go for birding along the edge of the Park. Later, we shall check in at the lodge.

Dinner and overnight at Rain bow camp/ Park Bandas

 Day 11:Whole day birding Kirumia Trail, Semuliki National Park.

After breakfast, we shall leave the lodge at 6:30 am. Thereafter, we shall start our full day birding safari on the Kirumia trail. Look for species like, Nkurengu rail , white tailed lark, Broad tailed Warbler, Compact weaver, Lizard Buzzard, Long Crested Eagle Brown Snake/Black Chested snake Eagle, Green Backed Eremomela, Pale Flycatcher, Sooty Chat, Black Billed Barbet, Huglines Francolin, Black Winged Redbishop and many more.

Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Bundibugyo town.

Day 12:  Bird as we transfer to Kibale NP

After breakfast, we shall leave the lodge at 6:30 am. Then, we shall do some birding as we head towards Queen Elizabeth National Park stopping for lunch at the gardens in Fort Portal.

Thereafter, we shall continue with the drive along the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains through Kasese and crossing the Equator.  Look out for birds like Grey-headed Kingfisher, Grey-backed Shrike, Common Fiscal, Starlings, Widowbirds and many more. Transportation time Kibale-Queen Elizabeth NP takes 8 hrs due to birding on the way (150 km).

Dinner and overnight at Chimpanzee Guest House/ Kibale safari lodge/Mountains of the moon hotel/ Kibale forest cottages.

 Day 13:Bird Kibale National Park

After breakfast leaving resort at 6:30am drive to the park and try early morning Green Breasted Pitta and lunch at Kanyanchu. Then after lunch bird the vicinity of  Kanyanchu.  Cuckoo, Grey Parrot, Black-billed Turaco, Narina Trogon, and many more. Primates like Chimpanzees, Red Colobus, Blue Monkey, Olive Baboon, Vervet Monkey, Red-tailed Monkey among others. Dinner and overnight as above.            

Day 14: Transfer to Entebbe Airport.
Early morning transfer back to Entebbe with stops for birding depending on your time of departure.
