Overview

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is one of the luxurious lodges located in the Southern part of Bwindi impenetrable forest. We find it in Nkuringo sector, as a conservation project, lieing between the Nkuringo Community, Wild Places Safari Company and the African Wildlife Foundation.

More to that, the lodge is an intimate high end luxury facility with over 2000 meters above sea level. This labels it as  one of Uganda’s highest safari lodges. There are spectacular views above the clouds where it sits, looking across the Virunga volcanoes with primordial and impenetrable forest views. Being that each privilege cottage is built of and on a volcanic stone, this provides the perfect spot to admire the forest beneath.

Location

The lodge is located in the South of Bwindi (Nkuringo sector) which has the highest number of the last remaining mountain gorilla species in the whole world. Nkuringo sector is a home of three mountain gorilla families available for trekking. Note that children below the age of 15 years are not allowed to go trekking by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). However, there are a number of activities that are specifically for children while you enjoy your trek. The lodge provides a sitter for the babies therefore, there is no need worry about your children while you are away.

Luxurious rooms

Each private cottage is built of local volcanic stone with spacious living room which is installed with a fireplace, vast overstuffed arm chairs and hand woven carpets. The cottages also provide a private veranda, a prefect point to rest and watch the wondrous forest and the volcanoes. The rooms have high ceilings, pale canvas furnishings and wooden beams which maximizes the sense of space.

Room prices vary during the high, peak and the low seasons. The prices per person are inclusive of meals on a full board. The lodge is available at any time of the year which makes it the best of all times. However, booking should be done earlier especially during the high and the peak seasons at their booking office 5 Binayomba road, Bugolobi, Kampala, Bwindi Impenetrable national park-Uganda.

Seasons

The low season is in the months of March, April, May, October and November,
The peak season is in the months of July and December (15th Dec to 10th Jan)
The high season is in the month of December (1st to 14th Dec), January (11th to 31st Jan), February, June and September.

The meals are freshly prepared with local ingredients which can either be served in your private cottage or in front of a roaring fire in the dining area.

How to get there

The lodge is just 5 miles from Bwindi Nkuringo sector. From Uganda, you can either access the lodge by road or air. By road, it’s an 8-9 hours’ drive to Bwindi where you drive south in Nkuringo sector five miles to the lodge.

From Rwanda, you can access the lodge from Rwanda via Cyanika or Katuna boarder to Bwindi . This will take you 5-6 hours.

By air, a traveler can board a chattered or scheduled domestic flight from Kajjansi airfield to Kisoro airfield which is just an hour’s flight and a drive from Kisoro to Nkuringo which is about 2 hours’ drive.

The lodge is near Bwindi national park which is one of the few places where gorillas still exist in their natural habitat in the whole world. The park has a very thick rain forest with a wide variety of tree species and thick vegetation cover which is food for the gorillas. Those who wish can spend time with these great apes, take photography and watch them as they continue doing their day to day activities and later rest at the lodge.

• Community encounter

The park was the ancient home of the Batwa with a number of secrets which still remain unveiled. When the national park came into existence, the Batwa forcefully left the forest, abandoning their low-impact nomadic lifestyles and forming new developed societies. A local encounter with the Batwa people will give you a chance to understand their local ways of living starting from wild honey collecting, hunting techniques and fire making to their unique traditional songs and dance.
