The Bwindi impenetrable national park is a spectacular location famous for its gorilla trekking activities that are carried out here. The park has four sectors namely; Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushanga, and Nkuringo in which half of the world’s endangered gorilla species live in their natural habitat. There are 3 Gorilla families in Nkuringo Sector namely; Nkuringo, Bushaho, and Christmas family.

The sector has three habituated gorilla families which are available for trekking on a daily in the sector;

• Nkuringo gorilla family;

First and foremost, the habituation process started in 2014 with this family. Initially, the group had a total number of 17 individuals. On the other hand, due to different circumstances, the number of members has been reducing. In addition, Poachers killed one Silverback making the group remain with 16 Individuals. Subsequently, poachers killed Rafiki in the act of self-defense as they alleged.

Additionally, today, poachers are serving 11 years in a jail sentence for killing Rafiki. Rafiki’s young brother Rwamutwe is now the dominant male.

• Bushaho gorilla family

Bushaho gorilla family was formed by one of the former silverbacks from the Nkuringo family. Most members were in Nkuringo family and had to go through habituation.

The group leader is Bahati. The family comprised 11 members including some of the members who had disappeared from the Nkuringo family-like Bahati silverback. Bahati is now the dominant leader of 3 adult females, 1 semi-adult female, 1 black back and 1 juvenile, and 1 infant. The group currently has a total number of 8 gorilla members

• Christmas gorilla family;

The family consists of 9 members although we can see only 6 members during trekking. The gorilla group gets its name from a dominant silverback which was born on Christmas. Furthermore, it has 1 silverback, 3 adult females, 1 baby, and 1 black back. Christmas gorilla family is very famous. It’s one of the gorilla families which has led to the high number of tourists who visit the Nkuringo sector.

For any tourist to take part in this famous Nkuringo sector trekking activity, you must present a valid gorilla trekking permit that allows you to trek the gorillas. The permits cost USD 700 for the foreign nonresidents, USD 600 for foreign residents, and 250000 for all east African residents to encounter Gorilla Families In Nkuringo Sector.
