The Busingye Gorilla Family

Overview

The Busingye gorilla family group is one of the five gorilla families in Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable national park. This family broke away from the Kahungye family in August 2012 due to certain misunderstandings. After the formation of this family, the park rangers thought that its members would eventually reunite with their former family. However, there were no evident signs of that possibility. Indeed, the family remained intact and is still that way till today.

The structure of the family

The Busingye family consists of 5 black backs, 3 infants and 1 silverback bringing the total number of its members to 9. However, it is important to note that the number of gorilla families or members in a family changes from time to time due to deaths, births and migrations. The migrations may involve joining of new members into the group or exiting of members to join another group. Some may even form a new group of their own.

The gorilla trekking experience

As you embark on your journey to the Rushaga sector, the beautiful sights of the rolling hills and the Virunga volcanoes will give you a warm welcome.

If you are to trek this family, it is advisable for you to arrive at the park headquarters by 7am for a 30 minute briefing session. Thereafter, you may proceed for the exciting gorilla trekking experience. The purpose of the briefing session is to equip the trekkers with information that they may need during the trek.

During the gorilla trek, professional rangers/tour guides lead the trekkers since they are knowledgeable about how to locate the gorilla family. Also, tracking a gorilla family depends on the place where it was last seen the previous night (during the nesting time).

The trek can take up to 8 hours depending on the movement of the gorilla family. When the trekkers finally find it, they will spend only 1 hour with them. It is also strictly advisable to keep a distance (7 meters) away from the gorillas to prevent disease transmission. Gorillas have close to 98% of human DNA and can thus be affected by human illnesses.
