Top of the Falls

Top of the Falls also known as top of Murchison Falls, found in Uganda’s biggest National Park, a home to the World’s most powerful waterfalls. This is where the longest river in the world squeezes itself through a very narrow 7-meter gap, dropping 45 meters down. The waterfalls flow along the nile to lake Albert, where they continue their journey northwards to South Sudan, Sudan and final to Egypt pouring into the Mediterranean sea.

 

About the falls

Murchison falls was named after the president of the royal geographical society Murchison in his honor. These falls are the most important object throughout the course of the flow of the river Nile till Mediterranean sea.

Originally, they are known as Kabalega falls which was named after the Omukama Kabalega “king” of bunyoro.

Reaching the top of Murchison falls requires you to drive there since the hike from the bottom is not operational. It’s a short drive distance from the main road that has been Tarmacked straight through the park, leading you to the top of the falls. There’s ample parking space fully tarmacked where vehicle can park without worrying about space.

At the site, you will you won’t need to pay for the guide because your safari guide will be able to guide you through. The place is also protected by the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers in charge of the park.

Since the view point is located in the southern part of the park, it’s free from predators and dangerous animals. It’s only surrounded by forests connecting to Budongo forest which is home to some primates in the southern part.

Due to the rising of water levels on victoria nile, hiking to the top of the falls is no more. However, you can have a nature walk to see some new places near the top of the falls. You can also rest there as you take some drinks or have a meal while looking at the falls.

At the top of the falls, there’s a camp site that is under the protection of the by the rangers of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and you can decide to camp there for a night as you have your adventure in Murchison Falls National Park.

More to see.

Murchison Falls National Park is home to the largest number of Rothschilds Giraffe in the world, with around 60% of the entire population living in Uganda. Most of them are in Murchison Falls National Park, together with Lake Mburo National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park as well as Pian Up Wildlife Reserve.

The park is home to the big 4 animals including the lions, leopards, buffaloes and elephants. Additionally, there are Rhinos in Ziwa Rhino sanctuary, in Nakasongola district which is en route to the park.

Besides viewing the falls from above, taking a boat cruise on Victoria Nile is always on the list of activities to do while visiting the park. The boat cruise starts at Paraa docking point as you sail to the bottom of the falls for about 3hours. While on the boat cruise, expect to see a good number of nile crocodiles, some elephants that come by together with buffaloes. Most interestingly, you get to see the hippos while on the boat, as they take a bath and others feeding.

Birds

While on  the boat cruise, you are able to see the Kingfishers, Bee Eaters and Harrier Hawks. A boat cruise and a game drive will enable you see a whole host of water birds and savannah dwelling birds. Taking some birding walks in the Kaniyo Pabidi Forest and The Royal Mile in Southern Budongo Forest will allow you to see forest bird species. On a lucky day while having the boat cruise, visitors have a chance to see the Shoebill Stork.

Having game drives in the park.

While in Murchison Falls National Park, you can have a number of gamme drives starting early in the morning. You can have the morning game drives, afternoon game drives, evening game drives as well as the night game drives. While on a game drive, you have the best chances in Uganda to see the lions and leopards. This is because there is plenty of prey to feed on like the antelopes and other weak animals.

On your game drive, expect to see the members of the big 5 like elephants and buffaloes. When early for the morning game drive, you will see the lions and the leopards as they move for a hunt. In Ziwa rhino sanctuary in Nakasongola, you get to see the rhinos which completes your search for the big 5 animals.
