Amazing things to see in Kigali : Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda founded in 1907 as an administrative outpost. It was officially launched in 1962 after Rwanda got her independence.
Firstly, Kigali is one of the world’s fastest growing cities and is still developing at a rapid incomparable speed. In addition, it is Africa’s (number one) cleanest city.
Secondly, being the ‘’Land of a thousand Hills’’ is just enough to describe Rwanda as a great nation. More to that, Kigali alone has a lot of amazing tourist sites that every adventurous traveler shouldn’t miss out on visiting. For instance;
Nyamata church.
The Nyamata Roman Catholic Church is only 30km south of Kigali City. It is a genocide memorial center where over 6000 Rwandese victims were buried in 1994. They were found worshipping from this church and were brutally killed on spot. More to that, you will find all their blood stained clothes, skulls and bones displayed inside this church and all over the churchyard. Trust me, this won’t leave you without shading a tear.
Kigali camp memorial
This is where UN peacekeepers brutally lost their lives from. They were 10 in number and were killed on their first day to Rwanda. Moreover, they were trying to protect the then Rwanda’s Prime Minister Agatha Uwilingiyimana during the massacre. Here, you will see 10 stone columns each representing a fallen soldier.
Inema Art Centre
To begin with, this is an African Art showcasing center located in the suburb of Kicyiru-Kigali. Secondly, the Inema Art Centre was founded by brothers and self-taught painters Emmanuel Nkuranga and Innocent Nkurunziza purposely to spur creativity for personal, social, and economic growth in Kigali-Rwanda.
More to that, it provides exposure to creative people and as well create opportunities to Rwanda’s underserved communities while using creativity for a productive livelihood. Furthermore, the paintings, sculpture, mixed media expressions are just amazing. Muslim Quarter
This green and white mosque is one of the oldest quarters in Kigali. It is called Masjid Al-Fatah and was founded in 1913 by Arabs that had come to Rwanda in 1901 with the main aim of spreading Islam and the Arab influence in Africa. Furthermore, this is where they based all their time in Rwanda until they left to other African countries.
This large Quarter accommodates many business including shops, Restaurants, mini supermarkets, hair salons which provide services to the tourists and the nearby people. Since it is on a hill, it which gives you a better/clear view of the modern Kigali City.
Kandt House Museum
You will get to know the geological background of Rwanda when you visit the Kandt House Museum. It shows the evolution of life, description of different flora and fauna of Rwanda’s Natural Parks. There is an exhibition of live reptiles with an aim of explaining the interrelation of nature and history. This museum is a great view point of the mountainous landscape of Rwanda.
Mountains
Kigali city sits on two mountains (Mount Kigali and Mount Jali). These however are kind of hills since they even accommodate peoples’ houses and standing on the top of these mountains, you clearly view the whole of Kigali city. Come enjoy mountain biking, cycling, horse riding and many more activities. You can as well interact with the nearby people as there are homes on these hills.
Kimironko market
The Kimironko market is the biggest busiest market in Kigali City with over 4 entrances and navigating through it is very easy. Come satisfy your appetite from here after a long day’s tour as all sorts of foods and fresh fruits are readily available in this market and at a lower cost. Souvenirs, handcrafts, colorful baskets, fabrics and much more are all found in this market at a pocket friendly price.
1000 Hills Distillery
This one is located on top of one of the Rwanda hills. Therefore as you enjoy your delicious cocktails of the whisky, vodka, Gin or a coffee liquor, you as well be able to see down the valley. The hilly location of this distillery gives a beautiful view of the whole Kigali town. It is a great place to refresh you mind after a long day’s Tour.
