Overview
The Bushaho Gorilla Family: There was a time when only one gorilla family dominated the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable national park. This was the Nkuringo gorilla family. At that time, there were only 8 gorilla permits for this sector. This greatly limited the number of visitors to this sector. All this changed after the habituation of a new group known as the Bushaho gorilla family. More gorilla permits were then available for gorilla trekking and thus attracting more visitors.
A brief summary about mountain gorillas (the human cousins)
Did you know that mountain gorillas share 98% DNA with human beings? This is after baboons and chimpanzees. Additionally, mountain gorillas are one of the world’s most intriguing creatures since an encounter with them is one of the best experiences ever! This is also because they behave and organize themselves like human beings.
The family structure
In 2012, some of the members of the Nkuringo gorilla family were reported to have disappeared. When this happened, serious efforts were put into searching for them. It was later discovered that the lost gorillas had joined the Bushaho gorilla family group.
The Bushaho gorilla family consists of 11 members and is led by Bahati, the silverback. Bahati was one of the members that left the Nkuringo gorilla family group and when he joined the Bushaho gorilla family group he became the leader since he was the dominant one (the silverback). Among the members of this group, there are 4 adult females, 2 semi-adult females, 3 infants, 1 silverback and 1 black back. In addition, the name Bushaho is a product of a name of a place-Bushaho where this family usually forages.
The dynamics of a gorilla family change from time to time due to occurrences such as births of new ones, deaths and migrations to other groups.
