All about the Rushegura gorilla family

With regard to structure, the Rushegura family consists of 19 members with their leader as one silverback. However, the number of members changes from time to time depending on situations such as death, birth of new ones or joining of new members into the group.

The name Rushegura is as a result of the place where the group separated from their former family known as Habinyanja in 2002. That separation was led by Mwirimu who wanted to stay close to his family. He broke away with 7 members and then his group was joined by 5 female members making it a total of 12 gorillas. From there onwards, he managed to build a stable family which increased to 19 members in 2010.

Interestingly, till this date Mwirima is a strong leader for his family. On several occasions, he even fights off wild gorillas in a bid to protect his group.

The Rushegura family used to cross to the Democratic Republic of Congo and then come back to Uganda but lately, they are settled peacefully in Bwindi Impenetrable national park (https://africasafaritravellers.com/bwindi-impenetrable-forest-national-park/.
